Question: My staff stretches out their tasks for what should be a very small project. My preference would be that they get the job done and let me know they are available for the next project but instead they take as much time as possible. I sense that their procrastination is a form of resistance. This resistance often causes little pockets of workplace conflict.  Please advise.

Answer: You are correct. One of the signs of resistance is that feeling that something is “stuck.” So what we want to do is break the resistance with some communication skills.  Here are tips to keep you in the loop and create movement.

1. Ask them to estimate how long it is going to take. If they give you an answer that you know is too long, you use the “willing” statement. “Are you willing to get it done in less time? You will know by their answer if they are still resistant.

2. Set a deadline, if you don’t feel like asking. “I need this done no later than 2:00 pm tomorrow.” Are you willing to be in charge of this and come straight to me when finished?

3. Reward them verbally at a team meeting or give some sort of bonus w hen done early.
