If you want transformation in your life or in your business there is a place where that change happens–the place where the energy shifts, so to speak. That place is willingness. Willingness is the fulcrum point of change. It sounds simple in theory. You have to be willing to do what is required. You have to be willing to take action. This is the willingness on a physical level. It’s fairly easy to take action in comparison with the willingness that has to occur on the non-physical level; the domain of beliefs, thinking, mental models, and ideas. The willingness to be wrong is about letting go of attachments.
Let me give you an example of just five attachments you may have to challenge. For transformational change to occur the ego must be challenged. You must be willing to be wrong. This means challenging your beliefs, assumptions, ideas and commitment to being right about what you know to be true. You indeed be right, but if you want new possibilities you must be willing to be wrong. Here are some attachments most of us cling to:
1. This is too difficult.
2. They will never agree to this.
3. That’s just who I am.
4. It’s too late.
5. I’m too old.
Before I started doing this work, I was a blue collar factory worker for over 20 years. In order to create what I really wanted I had to be willing to be wrong about many things. I had to be wrong about what was possible, about being too old and about starting too late. It was easy to find others to agree with me about how difficult it would be. The willingness to be wrong not only challenges you; it challenges others who also want to be right about the way things are.
Most of the time it’s the stories we tell and the attachments we have to being right that keeps us from creating what really matters to us in our lives and in our workplaces. The need to be right feeds the ego, but the willingness to be wrong changes a culture.
